Germans Edge out Scots in Quarter-Final Thriller

A rousing German comeback in the afternoon singles ended Scotland’s chances of title glory in the European Men’s Amateur Team Championship quarter-finals on the Algarve in Portugal.

Scotland looked on course for the semi-finals after winning both the morning foursomes matches, but in a repeat of the 2006 European Team event at Hillside, Germany fought back to win four out of five the singles to take the match 4 – 3, with Ross Kellett losing his match at the second extra hole to decide the tie.

Kellett had earlier accompanied James Byrne to an emphatic 4 and 3 foursomes win over Benedit Staben and Sebastian Kannler, before Scottish Amateur Champion Michael Stewart partnered Kris Nicol to a great win at the 21st hole.
